The world of sport is constantly evolving. New disciplines that test the limits of both body and mind are emerging, and Hyrox is one such discipline that has recently burst onto the scene. It is a functional fitness competition that combines endurance, strength, and strategy in a challenging format: 8 kilometres of running interspersed with 8 stations of functional exercises. Each kilometre of running gives way to a different physical challenge. And so on until you complete one of the most demanding and comprehensive tests around.
My name is Emilio Aguayo and I am a professional triathlete. Today, I would like to share my experience of Hyrox, because yes, I have also surrendered to this discipline. It is no coincidence that elite athletes from crossfit, athletics, functional training and even triathlon are joining the challenge. Why? Because Hyrox demands power, consistency and tactics, as well as a well-nourished body and a sharp mind.
What is Hyrox, and what makes it so engaging?
Hyrox is a competitive event that mostly takes place in closed pavilions. The indoor environment adds an extra layer of difficulty in the form of heat, humidity and a lack of natural ventilation. This is where nutrition and hydration play a key role. Having strength or speed is not enough. You have to know how to manage every detail.
This is how I prepare for a Hyrox event: invisible training and strategic nutrition
My preparation is not limited to physical training. There is invisible work behind it that starts every day with a precise nutritional strategy, fine-tuned with 226ERS products that accompany me in every session and every stage of recovery.
These are the things that are never missing from my daily life:
- Beta-Alanine: I take this daily to improve muscle performance and reduce lactic acid build-up. It helps me stay strong all year round.
- SUB9 Salts Electrolytes: I take two capsules before training. I sweat a lot and need to replenish salts from the outset.
- Omega-3, vitamin D and creatine: to support joint health, boost muscle strength and strengthen the immune system.
- I take three magnesium capsules at night to help me rest better and recover properly.
The moment of truth: the Hyrox competition!
Before competing, I fine-tune every detail. Here’s what I do:
- One hour beforehand: 300 mg of caffeine to activate the nervous system and sharpen the mind.
- 15 minutes before: a 226ERS Energy Gel containing 50 g of carbohydrates. This provides the energy I need for the first few kilometres and exercises.
- During the race: I have another gel just after the burpees and before the rowing. This is the halfway point of the effort and I need an immediate energy boost.
Hydration is another key factor: I drink water at each station and at every kilometre, always with added electrolytes to replenish what I lose through sweat. Indoors, the wind chill factor is high, and every drop counts.
Hyrox is a new frontier for endurance athletes
It’s not just a test; it’s a new battlefield where you can truly test your physical and mental limits. For me, it has been an exciting challenge and a new way to push my body to its limits. My experience of triathlons has helped me, but everything changes here: the paces, the transitions and the impact on my muscles. Without a smart nutritional strategy, there’s simply no way to perform at your best.
If you’re thinking about taking the plunge into the world of Hyrox, go for it! Train hard, take care of your body, and nourish every cell like a pro. That’s where 226ERS comes in. In this sport, it’s not just the legs that make the difference… it’s every detail.
