A few years ago I received a call from a good friend in which I told me if I had inconvenience in which One Iván Raña Fuentes He got in touch with me to consult some legal issues.
Obviously there was no one, it was my job and also remembered a 20 -year -old girl to leave his soul in the Triathlon of the Sydney 2000 Olympiad.
The professional relationship went to more and today the truth does not even know what I am with respect to Iván. I have had to live difficult times in sports, specifically the professional post-cyclism period, and Ivan make difficult decisions, the first if to continue in the pro cycling or return to the Tri; If anyone has doubts, I clarify them; Yes, I had a place in a Pro-Tour team! And he decided to return to triathlon because he had a dream and that was none other than an Olympic medal in London, but well this gives for several articles.
What touches us, we are in a resistance blog and I have started with a clear phrase of a person to whom the triathlon owes much, José Manuel Fernández Arza, founder of Spiuk. Back in 2009 I get in touch with him to tell him that Iván “return“ and during the conversation about whether the ideal at that time was to compete in an Olympic or long distance, he told me; "I pay this uncle because he is able to win in Hawaii". José is no longer, but from where he is sure that Hawaii 2014 will not be lost.
I have sat with Iván and as he had to talk about everything but triathlon at the end of the gathering I told him that they had asked me, specifically Jesus, to write something for the 226ers blog. So since we were, how about a question-answer? , to what he agreed with a pillo face, and this is the result:
When you decided to compete in long distance I remember that I told you why don't you start with a Half? And your answer was: I prefer an Ironman, I make a Half every day. Is Half today a short or long test?
Sincerely, Half is cool, but as when I started there were basically 2 long or short distances (without forgetting Zarautz, a test that I love, and that I made as younger), I love the Olympic, but I always had in mind I had the Ironman, out of respect I did not debut before. I did it when I thought I had enough base.
Now I see that many people do Halfs and then decide with Ironman. Few people encouraged me to go to IM. Of the connoisseurs in the matter only my colleague Alex. The Half is a test that goes well to the good short cyclists, and that is already quickly left for many IM. Every day more specific is its preparation, the level is rising a lot.
"The Half is a test that goes well to the good short cyclists, and that is already fast for many im."
Are you still convinced that to win in Hawaii you have to buy some nail shoes and touch the track? And from the Km 30 of the Iron Marathon, the fruits of the work on the track are collected?
Basically I do my planning, I seek to improve and for that I put stimuli on my training. There are people who can win Hawaii without touching the track. I do my job and what I understand that helps me improve. I do it out of necessity, not to write it on Facebook or be the most crushing.
Why do you think the times of the time of Mark Allen and CIA are not improved on foot?
The bike is now made for rhythm changes. My opinion is that at a constant rhythm you run better later. And we are talking about Mark Allen, that would be enough to say because it is not improved.
Is Hawaii's way more profitable in your preparation dispute the 70.3 World Cup or a stages turn?
I like to run by bike, the group's tension and adrenaline hook me, although sometimes I hate it in the race. I could design the last weeks running some 70.3 but I also want to enjoy as much as possible, and run some run motivates me a lot.
Van Lierde says that to win in Hawaii a manager, a coach and a power meter is needed, if you had to stay only with one of the three with which you would do it?
That is what he needs. In your career comes a time that you have more capacity to see what you need, where you limp and integrate it into your plan. I would keep the manager (with a chrono in my hand) now.
What differences or preparation approaches are between Hawaii 2013 and Hawaii 2014?
More kms and stronger by bike. The years are adapting to endure more load every year and give more.
Is participating in short distance tests part of your preparation for long distance or more the need to live the melee competition?
I love short competition, I also do it as preparation. It is a good complement to me. I repeat there are people who earn Hawaii and are not short, each looks for their way.
I have tried and I even have some bicycle of yours and they all have very narrow handlebars, does a good transition begin to have a 40 cm handlebar to move freely and be able to place themselves better for the transition?
That helps, but in short there is not as much tension as in a professional squad to notice it so much. In fact there are people who do not even know what handlebar it carries and gets down in front.
I have known offers that have come to you from sponsors sponsorships throughout 2014 and I have seen how you rejected, in good sense, a few thinking about whether that material was the most convenient or not for the Ironman of Hawaii. As we are in confidence, I remember a not a brand of sneakers with many $$$$ over the table. Why is the money not all for you?
I always have in mind to improve, now I see myself like never before and I don't want to feel uncomfortable with something. That this way of being does not make the Tri thoroughly expire on the economic issue, but the brands that are with me can say that they are because I like the material.
"The brands that are with me can say that they are because I like the material."
Although it sounds contradictory with the previous question, why did you decide to buy from your pocket the material you need but you are valued as you think?
Something like that happened to Bruce (The Boss). If you think you are worth more to the first thing something that does not value you.
Do you think that the triathletes are now being wrong in the focus of the sponsorships or rather than the marketing departments are not valuing the triathlon?
This seems like a war to see who makes more noise. I understand that an athlete has to communicate, and many can improve in this aspect but above all we must assess effort and dedication. For now I am motivated to make "noise" in the races. In many brands there are people who do not master the world of Tri, know who to invest, that races sponsoring, where to call, Ect, it is not an easy task if you do not master the world.
Ironman out of Hawaii, all behind Andy Potts?
Andy will stretch the group, but will take some behind, or a few. Many people go to the limit, and they don't get off so easy.
Swimming ends and touches bike segment, all waiting when Kienle arrives?
Waiting or trying to keep the differences as far as possible.
I have heard you the expression “Open gas to the top“ to define what is the bike segment in Hawaii but if you had to tell what that is translated in the race as you would explain?
At the tip of the armchair, noticing how you have the brushed crotch, the drool to the handlebar, you do not know when drinking or eating, and telling you who is hearing now? Then the break arrives, you recover and again, they are like small downloads. I think Clemente Alonso started with this expression: the electric chair.
"I have races recorded in the head where I have been able to leave everything running"
Start the race on foot and you are in the ointment in the race, will we see your soul like in Sydney 2000?
I have races recorded in the head where I have been able to leave everything running, I hope I repeat that again in Kona, and being in a good form of form.
Suppose you climb the Hawaii Ironman drawer or maybe you earned, would you change that podium for running a Tour of France?
A 3 post or run the tour? Run the tour. Winning would be another story. I continue to dream of Kona, and I train to the fullest to make it come true, if it comes out or does not come out, in my day to day that does not count because I cannot see the future, just imagine it.
I don't insist anymore, it's late and it's time to rest but before that door crosses a last question. If this long distance began with a "I make a 70.3" every day and I see the volumes on the way to Hawaii does this life compensate?
It compensates me from the point of view that I feel alive, that when you get home after a long and hard day, well -being. You do not think about whether you are going to win races, only that you are exhausted, sleep or eat is what you value most. It becomes everything simpler when Machacas. I would only compensate to win and if you do not want to look for the good, invent what you want to continue motivated.
Greetings to all and on October 11, remember the phrase of José Spiuk, "I pay this uncle because Hawaii can win"
